George Washington: Beer Enthusiast
The father of our country was also the father of American
craft brewing. Washington housed a serious English-style
Porter brewing operation at his Mt. Vernon estate for two
reasons; he wanted to eliminate dependence on foreign
goods to further the colonies' independence and he loved
beer so much, he couldn't bear the thought of running out.
Grover Cleveland: A Man of Excess
Cleveland was known for his beer belly and it was common
knowledge that he drank beer daily. In 1870, during a race
I mentioned this at the meeting. I wanted to follow up with a post so people who want to try it can find it easily.

The World's Strongest Beers

By Richard Goldsmith
When we went to the Hop City brew day, I bought one of each of the Mikkeller "Single Hop" line.
Cascade
Nugget
Nelson Sauvin
Simcoe
Warrior
Centennial
The first 2 I tried (Cascade and Nugget) were ok but nothing to write home about. The rest I had to pour out. Each had, the same overpowering insecticide taste.
I'm likely to steer clear of Mikkeller, but I'd love to hear if your experiences differ.
Last week I put 10lbs of honey in 4 gallons of water and boiled it for 30 minutes. In the boil I did a couple of hop additions.
.5 oz Sorachi Ace 30m
1 oz Cascade 5m
SG of 1.087
IBU 21.1
I used a sweet mead yeast hoping that there will be some residial sweetness to balance the hops.
I learned that a Hopped mead is a Miodomel.

This is my 1st flavored mead so it may fail completely. But who knows...
'Nollaig shona duit!'
Happy Christmas!
Rainbarrels took brewery off the grid
http://www.sanluisobispo.com/528/story/931245.html
Rainbarrel manufacturer RainHarvest Systems probably never imagined their barrels being put to use by a brew pub. But Atlanta's 5 Seasons Westside Brewery (www.5seasonsbrewing.com) did just that, capturing rainwater, filtering it, and using it to brew up some of the greenest beer flowing. Although the operation was quickly shut down by health officials, Creative Loafing's "Talking Head" Jeff Holland reports that 5 Seasons caught international attention for their planet-friendly efforts.
This is so wrong!?

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A Russian professor has evolved a technique that turns alcohol into powder for packaging in pill form.
Evgeny Moskalev of Saint Petersburg Technological University created the pills, which allow people to consume their favorite drinks just like any other solid food, the Times of India reports .
I picked up someting I hadnt tried before from the grocery. If you get a chance, it's pretty good.
Today Chelsea came over and we took my mash tun for it's maiden voyage.. We put together APA based on Northern Brewers Tongue Splitter pale ale.
We weren't able to use the "Kirskter 8000" due to minor technical difficulties. When I hooked the gas to it, I got no flow. I'm sure it's something very simple. We still ued it to elevate the mash tum.
Thanks Chelsea!
