Brew pot capacity

Is a 7.5 gallon capacity keg usable as a wort pot? The same guy who gave me the corni's has a 16 1/8" diameter, Quarter Keg (painted black) to give me.

Thanks

My 2 Boilers

I have a 71/2 gallon that I have used for 5 gallon batches in the past. You do have to be very cognizent of boil overs etc. but I have never had a problem. But I also use the Myers technique of skimming the excess protein off the top just before full boil mode.

That said, I am now using a 13.5 gallon keg and do not worry about boil overs any more. I say use it for 3 and 4 gallon batches if you are really worried about it.

Fair enough. Sight unseen, I

Fair enough. Sight unseen, I need to wait and look at it when I actually get it. It may be a great "Meyers 6-pack" brew pot for use with my 6-pack stainless fermenter. ;)

Sounds a bit close to

Sounds a bit close to capacity for a full-wort boil. I use a converted half-barrel (15.5 gallon) keg, and with some all grain batches, I've been distracted for a minute or two and had foam up to the rim. 1.5 gallons of head space doesn't leave much time to spot and stop a boil over.

Sounds like it would make a really good 5 or 6 gallon fermenter, though... Keeps light out, easy to insulate, easy to transport.

It could work but it would

It could work but it would be difficult. If you want a full 5 gallons of wort, you only have 1.5 gallons of space for evaporation, foamup, etc. You could only accomplish this by adding more water as evaporation took some away. It COULD be used as a HLT, though, or if you do smaller batches. I use an 8 gallon pot for my 3 gallon batches, and an 11 gallon pot for my 6 gallon batches.
