I am planning on being there tonight, though I haven't brewed anything for it and haven't ben able to go to the store to get any OTS examples.
I'll be driving the 2.2 miles to the meeting, but I have become a bit of a light weight because of the med I have been taking and won't be able to sample much... :|
I'm sorry to say I won't be able to make this months meeting, I'll be camping in North GA. Will, are still planning on doing the second session on Promash?
i sure am glad folks like rye beers. i personaly they suck and wheat beer (there step child) also suck ASS. WELL see yall at the july metting. i will make an american wheat dry of course.
All, just a heads up for the 19th, we just moved....
My address is 117 Archstone Square, McDonough, GA 30253....
I will refrain from taking any muscle relaxers for the meeting and will try to bring Jeff some more of my entertaining brewing notes to review. :-)
To get a head start, send me some ideas for commercial American Wheat and Rye Beer for me to pick up for tasting. The only rye beer I normally get is the Terrapin, which is more of a pale. Won't have any home brew since we just moved.
Also, I think we all enjoyed the pairings Karen and Brian did, so I will try and research some pairings to do for the meeting. Let me know if you have any ideas there as well.
I made my version of an American Roggenbier a few nights ago.
The plan was to make rye malt the star of the beer. Yet...I wanted to get a nice citrus hop nose from the classic american hop....cascade.
1.050 - OG
15 - IBU's
40% Pils
60% Rye Malt
mashed at 155 for 90 minutes
used rice hulls to aid in lautering at a rate of 10% of the rye grist. (5 lbs of rye malt would mean I would use .5 lbs of rice hulls) I might have been able to cut back the hulls a tad...but I did not want to take the chance of a stuck sparge.
10 IBU's at 60 min. with cascade
10 min. cascade flavor addition
1 oz. / gal. of wort with cascade at flameout
boiled for 90 minutes
pitched dregs of American Ale II and fermenting at 72
I've been wanting to do this beer for a long time but other beers were a priority. I have no idea if it will even taste good. I really like rye pale ales and have been interested to see what a LOT of rye would be like.
don't care much for rye bread but rye beer or at least the ones i've had are great. can't wait to see how it turns out. as far as a stuck sparge i typically use 1/3 lb rice hulls in every batch. it seems like cheap insurance.
I made a 10 gallon batch of Hefeweizen about 3 weeks ago (using previously stated Junkyard brewery). I added 1/2 lb of rice hulls to the grain bill (60/40 wheat/barley), and had no problems with the sparge. Rice hulls are my heroes.
I haven't done much research on rye. Is it much like brewing with wheat as far as using highly modified malts, protein rests, etc? This rye thing seems intriguing. I shall have to pick up rye, and give it a try.
