From the Hip (Part 5)

The boil went on for ever, but other than that was uneventful. Maybe it wasn't really that long, but I was really exhausted. I was seriously thinking that this was the last batch of beer I'd ever make... My feet, ankles and legs throbbed from being on my feet all day. But I couldn't very well stop!

I made all my additions on time, and at the 15 minute mark I dropped chiller into the boiling wart to be sanitized and got Devin (previous "west side" brew fest designated driver) to fill my 10 gallon beverage cooler with every ice cube in the house. When the iced cooler was back I had already added the Irish Moss.

I placed the pump on top of the ice and added enough water to sink it. Started sanitizing. As the Star San did it's thing I stirred the wort to optimize the effect of the chiller and help oxygenate it. (nope, none of that new fangled Olive Oil treatment for me) Also found time to dump my spent grains onto a hard packed clay patch in the yard (can you say worm food?) and started cleaning up what I could.

The ice was just enough to get the wort down to pitching temperature. Handed the bucket to my son to carry up to the kitchen, took 2 Advil and made several more trips up and down the stairs (30+, but who's counting) hauling the rest of the unwashed stuff to the kitchen for a cleaning.

(Note to readers... Just one more to go)
